Aortic Stenosis

Mitral Valve Prolapse

Regurgitation

  • Mostly congenital

  • Calcium deposits make the vessel thinner, requiring more force to get enough blood through

  • Rheumatic fever

    • 5-10 years after having a sore throat or scarlet fever

  • Both congenital and acquired forms

  • Common with connective tissue disorders, such as Marfin syndrome

  • Excess valve leaflet material

  • Characteristics of the valve with MVP

    • Valve is too think or large

    • Not adequately supported by the cordae tendinae, allowing it to flip backwards into the atrium

    • Stretched opening of the valve

  • Rheumatic Fever

  • Injury to the valve due to heart attack, trauma, or infection
